Objective: The author measured oral malodor and salivary flow, by use of moisture paper, to describe the relationship between the saliva flow, oral moisture and oral malodor.
Methods: Sixty volunteers ranging in age from 20s to 50s, who had visited a dental clinic in Seoul were recruited. They were given a questionnaire for an oral habits check and an oral examination with a malodor check by use of a B&B checker. We assessed the association of salivary factors with the malodor from oral, breath and nasal site.
Results: Salivary flow was highly related with oral malodor, especially in oral gas. We measured oral moisture with a digital moisture checker unit recommended for clinical use, due to accuracy and a strong relationship with oral malodor gas.
Conclusion: It is recommended to use a moisture meter for measuring salivary flow for malodor control, because of simplicity of use and accuracy.
